23/4/19 – Green School, Bali held a three-day community project at Peduli Anak Foundation Lombok. Total 27 students, 6 teachers, 4 bio-bus drivers, 2 parents traveled from Bali to Lombok on their bio buses. They also brought along with them 180 liters biofuel, 30 liters paint, 100 seedlings, 10 shovels, and 1 machete.

During their visit, they organized three main projects focusing on rebuilding and education. They are gardening, mural painting, and sustainable education. One of Green School teachers, Ms. Alison, visited Peduli Anak after the earthquake and she recommended us for her school’s community project.

Before the earthquake hit Lombok in 2018, Peduli Anak already started an organically grown vegetable garden in our backyard. We even already did several harvests. Unfortunately, after the earthquake, we lost our garden. Now with extra funding, we’re able to expand our garden, but we have to start from scratch. Green School is world-famous for its sustainability program and awarded as the greenest school on earth. Therefore, the collaboration between Peduli Anak and Green School is a perfect match.

Their gardening team worked together with our gardeners and children to create a garden on a small plot of land. We planted tomatoes, chilies, papayas, passion fruits, some herbs, rosella, marigolds, and sunflowers. Furthermore, the school also donated 5 million rupiahs for our gardening project.

In the meantime, their mural team also painted 2 areas in our playground and primary school. The murals show words of encouragement, shapes, and drawings related to earth with cheerful and playful tones. They also included some of the kids in the process.

Last but not least, the sustainable team, led by the founder of byebyeplasticbags Isabel Wijzen, organized some fun activities and workshops such as making handsoap bars from used cooking oils, recycle old t-shirts into bags and presentations about plastic waste and how their bio-bus works. Children were especially amazed that they could use old cooking oils to fuel a bus!

Even though they were quite busy with their main projects, they spared some time to mingle with the kids and play some games like tug of war, slackline, chess, volleyball, soccer and more.

By the end of Day 3, they completed all projects and said their goodbye. There were no dry eyes. We had such a wonderful time working and playing together. Thank you Green School, Bali. Hope to see you again someday!
