Learning Crochet Through Art Therapy

Children from House 14 took part in an art therapy session where they were introduced to crochet in a calm and guided setting. For many of them, this was a completely new experience, giving them the chance to try something different from their usual daily activities.

Supported by our volunteer, Aisha, the session also welcomed a teacher from Aru Craft who guided the children throughout the activity.

Starting with Something New

At the beginning, some of the children felt unsure as they tried to follow the crochet steps. Their hand movements were still unfamiliar, and the yarn didn’t always go as planned.

But as the session continued, they slowly began to understand the basic techniques. Step by step, each child started to find their own rhythm and became more comfortable with the process.

The Benefits of Crochet in Art Therapy

Crochet is one form of art therapy that helps children build focus, patience, and a sense of calm. The repetitive and steady movements can be soothing, allowing them to feel more relaxed as they work.

It also encourages persistence. Each small success, even a simple stitch, gives them a sense of achievement that helps build their confidence.

One of the children, Hamdi, shared, “At first I was confused and it felt difficult, but after trying again and again, I finally could do it.”

A Process That Builds Calm and Confidence

This activity is not only about the final result, but about the process itself. Through crochet, the children learn to slow down, stay patient, and enjoy each step along the way.

What began as uncertainty gradually turned into a more focused and calm environment, where the children felt more confident in what they were doing.

Activities like this create space for children to express themselves in different ways. Art therapy supports not only new skills, but also emotional well-being, helping them feel more at ease and connected to the process.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Aisha and Aru Craft for their support and guidance. Their presence made this experience both meaningful and enjoyable for the children.

Through simple sessions like this, children learn that growth takes time, and that with patience and effort, they can discover new abilities within themselves.
